Ms. Selders always had a passion for helping other, her passion started at a young age in which continued while working in the East Baton Rouge School System for 20 years, which led to her first program created “Back to the basics” an innovative etiquette program that focused on heath, hygiene, self-awareness/esteem, emotions/feelings, first impressions/ lasting impression, emotions and effective thinking for a change. 

Ms. Selders went on to receive a degree in Business Administration from Phoenix of Arizona and later on in Social Work from Southern University.

 

Turning Point Outreach Services was founded by Valarie Selders in 2004.  The agency began by serving youth and families through programs funded by the Capital Area Human Services District which including the evidenced-based Strengthening Families Program and Lions Quest.  

Since its beginning, the agency has expanded its mission to serve at-risk and delicate families in our community. TPOS incorporate a much needed balance of academics, recreation, enrichment, and cultural activities that focus on building on the strengths of individuals and families in the East Baton Rouge and surrounding areas.

Currently, Turning Point offers an Independent Living component for community members with mental illness, geriatrics, veterans and HIV/AIDS individuals by providing affordable housing, life skills and job skills training.  This agency is expanding to offer housing opportunities for individuals released on probation/parole status through East and West Baton Rouge Parishes.  In addition, staff and volunteers offer HIV/AIDS testing, condom distributions, awareness programs and case management for program participants and the surrounding community as well as substance abuse and sexual health workshops. Turning Point Outreach Services is open to all persons without regard to ethnicity or sexual orientation.
